What I'm thankful for: February 29

Today I'm thankful for...

Leap Day!

Happy Leap Day AKA the day that only comes four years and has something to do with making our calendar not go haywire. Maybe Leap Day has a nicer ring to it.

I'm thankful for an extra day in this year to reach my goals. It also makes this blog have a catchier title. It also, also causes lots of websites to have sales related to the number 29. It let me get a couple of writing books and a magazine cheaper, so I'm extra thankful for an extra day. Now, let's leap into March (groan...those writing books can't get here fast enough!).

What I'm thankful for: February 28

Today I'm thankful for...

Good books!

I've read a couple of books lately that I've really enjoyed. They made me think about all of the books that I've read that I haven't enjoyed. I'm bad about not wanting to give up reading a book, even if I don't enjoy it. I don't know why; I guess I feel sorry for the authors or something. Since I have that weird quirk, it makes the books I actually like that much more enjoyable.

Are you surprised that a librarian took this long to get to this topic?

What I'm thankful for: February 27

Today I'm thankful for...

Avocado!

I don't know if it's a fruit or vegetable (and I'm too lazy to look it up...) or some kind of magical superfood that comes in a little wrinkly case, but I love it. I like to put it on salads, in wraps and sandwiches, and eat it as guacamole. Plus, I recently watched a video about how to cut it and take the seed out, and it's really helped me not to make such a big mess when I'm cutting it. If you know how much skill I have in the kitchen, you would realize what a big deal this is to me. First avocado, next, the world...

Oh! Shameless plug time...I actually have another blog that I don't write in very often, but I hope that will change since I'm writing for this blog on a regular basis and am at the computer anyway. I just wrote an entry about my newly found strong dislike of Old Navy. Check it out!

Today I'm thankful for...

Blog readers!

This week I've had two non-family members tell me that they read and enjoy my blog. That may not seem like a big deal, but it meant a lot to me (and it means a lot that my family is reading it too!). So to all of you reading, I'm thankful for you. Sometimes when I get home late, and I'm struggling to think of a topic and tempted to skip for the day, I remember you and know that I can't let you down.

Wow, that felt really dramatic. Maybe I should've just stopped at thank you! ;)

What I'm thankful for: February 25

Today I'm thankful for...

Coupons!

I've always loved coupons. They're like free money for the products you're going to use anyway. And sometimes, especially if you shop at Kroger and use a plus card, you'll get free coupons for products that you buy a lot. I know that they're tracking purchases and selling my name to advertisers and what not, but it's worth it for free eggs ha ha. I'm by no means an "extreme couponer," but I do okay. I also love my Entertainment Book that I don't use quite often enough. It has a lot of buy one get one free meal coupons, which help make date night just a little cheaper, even if I do seem a little bit like an old lady sometimes when I bust them out!

Today I'm thankful for...

Jeans!

Jeans = the weekend. How can you go wrong with that formula? Plus, they're comfortable (unless you're trying to squeeze yourself into a pair that are too tight. In that case, give it up!), and they're versatile. And when they start looking funky, you can cut them into shorts (or jorts, if you will). It's a 2-in-1 pair of pants...like a mullet for your legs...

Today I'm thankful for...

Indoor plumbing!

There's no particular reason or story behind this. I think it's just one of those things that we've gotten so used to that we don't think about anymore, but it's wonderful and we should appreciate it. I'm sure all of you know at least one person who didn't have indoor plumbing growing up. Ask them what it's like to go to the outhouse at 2 AM on a cold, rainy night. I bet you'll hug your toilet after hearing that...figuratively of course, unless their story is really disgusting...

Today I'm thankful for...

Lent!

I'm not Catholic, so I won't even pretend to know everything about Lent. However, I do know that it involves giving something up from Ash Wednesday (today) until Easter Sunday, a 40 day time period. This blog posting gives an idea about why you give something up during Lent. I'm choosing to give up Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest during this time period. I've become a little addicted to those websites, even going on them when I'm supposed to be in class, and this seems like a good way to help me with that. Also, I need to work on developing more of a quiet time and spending more time with God. I've now freed up more time than I care to admit, and that can go back to Him! I have a lot of other things I need to do that I've been procrastinating on, so now that my tools of procrastination have been taken away, I'm excited to see what I accomplish.

Now, if you got to this entry from Facebook or Twitter, rest assured that I'm not cheating already. I have an automatic RSS feed crawl that will post to those sites whenever I update the blog. Plus, my brother changed all of my passwords, and I have no idea what they are, and he definitely won't give them to me before Easter! I hope that eases your mind! ;) If for some reason, you need another way to contact me during Lent, leave a comment on an entry or email me at ambercanread at gmail dot com, replacing the at and dot with the symbols, of course.

What I'm thankful for: February 21

Today I'm thankful for...

Presidents!

Somehow I got my days mixed up because I intended to post this one yesterday for President's Day. Oh well! Being the President of the United States is such a thankless job (from what I infer since I've clearly never been the POTUS. Shoot, I barely managed to be president of my junior class...). Many candidates have an idealistic view of what they are going to do to help the country, but usually after being in office a few months, those visions change and they are in survival mode. Can you imagine having a job where your every move is scrutinized and you can't even go to McDonald's by yourself? Not to mention that roughly half of the country probably will never like you just because of your political party. So whether you're a Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, or whatever, take a moment to pray for the president. He definitely needs it!

What I'm thankful for: February 20

Today I'm thankful for...

Evernote!

This is another post (like my post on Remember the Milk) about a product I love! Evernote is basically just an online notebook. It's pretty simple and straightforward. You can create as many notebooks for as many things as you can think of. For example, I have a shopping list, CDs I want to borrow from the library, and a list of websites I want to visit. I also have some recipes I've scanned in that I saw in a magazine. You can add tags to each note and search through the text of each note, even if it's an attachment or handwritten. There are Android and Apple apps so I can use it on all of my devices and make notes whenever I'm not near a computer. I have the free version, and it's worked just fine for me. I definitely recommend Evernote if you're notorious for writing things on little scraps of paper and forgetting about them. I still do that, but at least I know where I could be storing that information...

Today I'm thankful for...

Relaxation!

I probably sound like a broken record, but life is busy. Sometimes you're coming and going so much that you feel like you only come home to shower and sleep! Thankfully sometimes there are days that just lend themselves to being able to stay home and relax. Today, with the "snow storms," my plans were postponed, and I was able to stay home all day. I wasn't overly "productive," but I feel calmer than I have in a while and much more prepared to face the week. Maybe you don't have time to be lazy for an entire day, but you can stop and take some time to relax every day. It will work wonders for you, and you'll be more motivated to tackle whatever the rest of that day or the next day has in store for you.

Today I'm thankful for...

Thumbs!

On the same website that I saw February 11th's topic (too tired to try to link...sorry), I also saw that today was thumb appreciation day. So thumbs, I appreciate you. You can convey agreement, help stabilize things, and allow me to text more efficiently. Although you're shorter than the other fingers, you're just as mighty!

What I'm thankful for: February 17

Today I'm thankful for...

The magical sauce that Japanese/hibachi restaurants have!

I don't know what that sauce is made of (or even what it's called so I can't look it up), but it's magical. Yes, magical. It goes with anything that Japanese and hibachi restaurants serve. It makes things even more delicious, which is just about impossible in those kinds of restaurants. Magical sauce, I salute you.

I realized that a lot of my postings have been about food or drinks lately. Hopefully I'll be focused on something non-edible/drinkable tomorrow!

Today I'm thankful for...

Day after holiday sales!

Whether it's candy for 50% off, a costume that's 70% off, or Christmas cards for 90% off, the day after a holiday can give you a great opportunity to stock up on stuff for the next year (unless it's candy...that should be brought to me as soon as possible!). You have to pounce quickly though because people will spot a sale like a shark senses blood!

What I'm thankful for: February 14

Today I'm thankful for...

Love!

Love comes in many forms. The most obvious form of love celebrated on February 14 is romantic love, but love (and Valentine's Day) is much more than that. As Chris, a student that I know from work, posted on his Facebook this morning: [Valentine's Day should be] about the love you have in your heart for another person. It should be about people that make you smile and feel confident and strong. (Told you I would quote you, Chris!). He's absolutely right! Some people are in romantic relationships with people that don't make them smile or feel good. Some people are single, but have wonderful families and friends that continually build them up and make them feel great. I'm blessed enough to be in a fantastic relationship (1 year today! Woo hoo!),  have an outstanding family, and great friends, so I do have the best of both worlds. That's just my side note for those I love! ;)

The point of this day isn't to make you feel even more single than you do (and as someone who spent 27 years being single, I'm qualified to say this...ha ha) but to show appreciation for and be appreciated by people you love. It's also about God's love for you. John 3:16 is hands down, unequivocally, the most well-known verse in the Bible, and it's also the greatest example of love that any of us will ever see. No matter how great the people in your life are, they will let you down. There will be harsh words and misunderstandings, simply because we're all humans with emotions. But God will never let you down. His love will always be there on February 14, 15, 16, 17, and beyond. Be thankful for that and never forget how much He loves you.

Today I'm thankful for...

Gummy vitamins!

I don't know why I can't swallow a vitamin. I can eat an entire Oreo in one gulp, but when it comes to something that tiny, I just, well, choke. Luckily some intrepid, enterprising person invented the gummy vitamin for adults (since Will told me I'm not allowed to take Flintstones vitamins anymore since I was over the age of 7...). Gummy vitamins make taking vitamins exciting. As exciting as taking a vitamin can be anyway.

Today I'm thankful for...

Support!

Sometimes life can get overwhelming. There's a lot to do, and you're not sure that you're really going to be able to accomplish your goals and retain what little bit of sanity you have left. Luckily, God places people in your life that support you and encourage you. Since it's almost Valentine's Day, I'm going to get sappy for a moment and say that one of the people He's placed in my life is Will. The most recent example of his support was when I was venting to him about my homework and my lack of motivation because I didn't think it applied to me. He listened and then helped me to see things in a different light. His support then and all of the other times is truly a blessing. My family also continually blesses with me support, both emotionally and by doing little things that help me out when I'm stressed out. These are my main sources of support, but there are countless others who provide support in both large and small ways. I'm thankful for and love you all! =)

Today I'm thankful for...

 Milk!

Okay, I don't remember all of the specifics of this, such as how I found it or what the actual day is called, but today was something like don't cry over spilled milk day. Although that's a tough order to follow, I guess I'll respect the wishes of the day and hold my tears. I'm thankful for milk for all of its calcium and vitamins, and I've read in many places that a glass of low fat chocolate milk is great after a workout. I don't know how true that is, but I'm okay with believing it.

Insurance and paid vacation/sick days are a blessing. That's all I have to say tonight.

What I'm thankful for: February 9

Today I'm thankful for...

Shower radios!

I don't know how many of you have a shower radio, but all of you need one. It's not just for using while you're in the shower. It's great to have music playing while you clean the bathroom. Nothing helps distract you from the fact that you're cleaning a toilet like a little Whitesnake. When you're taking a shower after a tough workout and you can barely lift your arms to wash your hair, some N*SYNC will help you power through it. And showers have some of the best acoustics that you could ever ask for. My shower radio also has a mirror and a clock. I think I want to go take a shower right now just so I can go use it...

Today I'm thankful for...

Past examples of assignments posted on websites!

This one is completely dedicated to all of my UT friends!

So as I mentioned yesterday, I'm a huge procrastinator, and it's still true today (ha ha). I'm working on an assignment for one of my classes that I may or may not have waited too long to have started, and I was a little stuck on how to format it. I didn't want to email the professor because doing so would be an admission of guilt that I had barely started and that I had probably missed some nugget of wisdom during class that completely explained how to do it. However, in my addled little brain, I remembered that this particular class (like some of the professor's other classes) had a website with assignments from past students. Now, this may seem like a gray area, but I can assure you I am in no way cheating off of these assignments. I am definitely seeing what format they put their papers in and structuring mine in a similar manner, but my content is completely different, and I am doing my own research. I get hung up on little details sometimes though, and seeing actual examples is extremely helpful for me. If any of my UT friends read this, please comment and tell me I'm not alone!

Today I'm thankful for...

Planning ahead!

I'm a HUGE procrastinator, so you won't hear me being thankful for planning ahead very often, but when I plan ahead, I go all out. The inspiration for this topic is a little nerdy (and I may have even mentioned it before), so bear with me. When I first had the idea to do this project, I was just certain that I could think of over 366 things that I was thankful for. I'm very blessed, so I didn't think I'd have any difficulties coming up with topics. That was in December when I didn't have classes, work was slow, and the air was thick with Christmas magic. Despite my enthusiasm, I decided to go ahead and create a list of every day of the year and things I'm thankful for. Now that it's February and things continue to get crazier, I'm glad I did a little nerdish planning ahead. Not every date is filled in, but I have kind of a "stand by" list that I can use whenever it's 11:15 and I realize that I haven't written an entry for the day yet. Or whenever I'm grumpy and having a pity party and can't think of anything I'm thankful for (don't judge...you've been there too). If I would apply this concept to more important things, like school work, fixing my lunch, and ironing my work clothes, then I would be a rock star. Until then, I'll procrastinate, eat frozen meals, and find pants that are made of that material that doesn't wrinkle...

Today I'm thankful for...

Snacks!

This is kind of a "big girl" posting to do lol. I'm thankful for snacks and not necessarily even junk food. Some days get really long between work, classes, exercising, spending time with family and friends, etc, and no one likes to be hungry. Snacks help me make it through some of those long days without getting cranky, okay, crankier than I would be anyway. Plus, a trainer told me tonight that snacks are good to have (healthy snacks of course), so I'm completely justified. Yay!!

Today I'm thankful for...

Modern Bible translations!

As a Christian, I need to spend quiet time in the Word of God, studying it and using it to help me grow spiritually. But, sometimes I can't quite understand exactly what the King James version is trying to tell me. Maybe I need to do a lot more studying, but until I do, I'm thankful for more modern translations that allow me to have more of a grasp upon what the Bible is saying.

Today I'm thankful for...

Remember the Milk!

Remember the Milk is one of the greatest websites/apps in my life! I can make multiple to do lists, set dates on them, tag them (which appeals to my inner nerd), and get reminders through email and text messages. It also integrates into my Gmail and work mail, so I can see everything I have to do in one spot. For someone as scatterbrained as me, websites like Remember the Milk are a lifesaver! And no, they're not sponsoring this post! ;)

Today I'm thankful for...

My heart!

Today was go red for women's heart health (or something like that...) to raise awareness about heart disease in women. Even though you probably hear more often about men having heart problems, heart disease is actually the number one cause of death for women. Heart disease runs in my family, so I've got to be extra vigilant about taking care of my heart. It does so much for me, so I need to treat it as kindly as possible so it will work well for a long time!

Today I'm thankful for...

Groundhog Day!

"Phil? Hey, Phil. Phil! Phil Connors? Phil Connors, I thought that was you!"

Ah yes, Groundhog Day. The day when we rely on a groundhog in Pennsylvania to determine whether or not we'll have six more weeks of winter. It's one of those odd sort-of holidays that people acknowledge but (to my knowledge) there aren't any major celebrations for. However, the proliferation of quotes from the movie Groundhog Day on my Facebook news feed made it a holiday worth celebrating in my book.

For the curious, the groundhog saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. Or, six more weeks of mildly deceptive springlike weather that makes all of us have spring fever six weeks too early. Tomato, tomahto.

What I'm thankful for: February 1

Today I'm thankful for...

Text messaging!

This is going to come as a shock to all of you, but with a few exceptions, I really don't like to talk on the phone. I would much rather leave a voicemail for someone or send him an email rather than having to make small talk on the phone. Another problem I have on the phone is that I'll forget to tell people things. I'll have a mental list of things that I am going to tell them, and I'll forget at least one thing until right after I hang up the phone. So, text messaging is one of the greatest things in my life! I can talk to the people I want to all day, usually without disturbing the people around me, but I don't sit around on the phone all day. Plus you can work on your dexterity, or at least that's what I tell myself!
