What I'm thankful for: April 30

Today I'm thankful for...

Honesty!

Today is National Honesty Day, so if you've ever wanted to tell someone that yes, that dress does make her butt look big, today is the day to do so! Honesty is an underused skill. I think people are so used to telling little white lies to spare other people's feelings that we've forgotten how to be honest in a tactful way. I always attempt to be honest, but I'm just as guilty as anyone of telling little fibs to hide my true feelings about someone, their behaviors, etc. I'll try to be more honest today...or I'll try not to talk as much!

Today I'm thankful for...

The Library of Congress!

This was the posting I was going to do on April 24 before I found out it was NKOTB Day. The LOC was established on April 24, 1800 and is considered the research library of the United States. As a librarian, I dream of going there one day. That's right suckas, I don't dream of Disney...I dream of the LOC!

Today I'm thankful for...

Healing!

I don't know many details about this since I'm posting late and forgot to look up the details, but today is World Healing Day. Any type of healing makes you feel like a new person. I've been blessed enough not to have experienced many physical problems in my lifetime, but there was a point four years ago when I broke my foot. I managed to break one of the most difficult to heal bones, which caused me to have to wear a cast for nearly three months. When that bone finally healed and I could walk without crutches, drive myself, etc, I felt like I was myself again. Emotional and spiritual healing can bring the same results, even if you don't look any different externally. God can heal you when you're broken, but you have to meditate on His Word and verbalize His Promises. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good at this, but I'm working on it. So, if there's something plaguing you on this day of healing, turn it over to the ultimate Healer and see what He can do for you!

Today I'm thankful for...

Trees!

Today is Arbor Day, a day on which individuals are encouraged to plant and care for trees. I didn't plant a tree today, but I appreciated their shade when I went to walk/jog during my lunch break. That has to count for something, right?

Today I'm thankful for...

Poetry!

April is National Poetry Month, and today was evidently something called Poem in Your Pocket Day or something like that. While I'm still not exactly sure what that is, I think it has something to do with carrying poetry around with you and giving copies of it to people. I've never been the biggest poetry fan because I don't like trying to interpret things. As an undergraduate English major, I feel like I should be much more appreciative of poetry than I am. I think I was warped by having to analyze so many in college! But, I do enjoy songs, and really, aren't they just poetry set to music? I also enjoy haikus. I wrote a haiku about Spongebob once. If I ever find it again, I'll post it so all of you can appreciate poetry in a new way...

Today I'm thankful for...

My hairstylist!

Today is hairstylist appreciation day, and I have to talk about how much I appreciate mine! Her name is Mancy (EDIT: It's actually Nancy but this was too funny to change. My iPad has a mind of its own!), and she works at Alison's Salon. She is blunt, but in a good way, meaning that she'll never let you get a haircut or style that won't suit you or that you won't know how to style. She doesn't overcharge, which I also really appreciate. If you're looking for a new stylist (men or women), definitely give Nancy a call!

Today I'm thankful for...

New Kids on the Block!

This wasn't my planned entry at all (I'll write it next week), but when I saw a friend's Facebook posting about how today is NKOTB day, I knew that I had to seize the opportunity! They were my first concert and coincidentally the most recent concert I've attended! They were the pioneers of the 90s boy band movement (and as we all know, I LOVE Justin Timberlake). I had t-shirts, dolls, pins, a bedspread...you name it, I probably had it. And you know what, I still love them today. Don't hate...celebrate! (Wow, did I really say that?!?)

Here's how to celebrate NKOTB day!

Today I'm thankful for...

Caring college professors!

Today is Shakespeare's birth/death day (which is weird that it happens to be the same day...), and it made me think about one of my undergraduate professors who would always commemorate the day with a pin and maybe some kind of costume. My memory is hazy on what he actually wore, but when I thought about that, I started thinking about how caring he and the other English professors were. I'm a nerd, and I love English-y things, but some classes (Grammar, Style, and Editing) were too much for me. When things were too much, the professors would take time to console me and let me know that, yes, I would understand the subject matter if I kept working at it, and no, I wasn't the dumbest person alive. I had a lot of great undergraduate professors, both within and outside of the English department. I've also had some great graduate professors both at my tiny school and my large school, so it's not a phenomenon unique to small universities! So, to all of the professors who have taken their time to guide me and make sure that I keep working hard, thank you. Your words have meant more to me than you'll ever know! Also, to all of the professors I work with but never had classes with, keep plugging away. No matter how thankless you feel that your job is, I promise you are making a difference in at least one person's life!

Today I'm thankful for...

Earth!

Today is Earth Day, and I'm not going to pretend that I'm the type that would know/celebrate Earth Day. I knew it was sometime in April, but that was about it. I'm probably not the Earth's best friend. I don't recycle too many things. I leave the lights on sometimes when I'm not in a room, and I take showers that are longer than 5 minutes. Despite my lukewarm treatment towards the Earth, I'm concerned about what's going to happen to it down the road. Maybe we'll just figure out a way to colonize another planet or have a cruise ship in the sky like on Wall-E. Okay, maybe I'll start turning off the lights...

Today I'm thankful for...

Record stores!

Okay, to be fair, when I say record stores, I'm really talking more about CD stores that used to exist like Media Play, but since today was Record Store Day, I had to go with a broader topic! I'll be the first to admit that I like the convenience and price of downloading music on a song by song basis, rather than having to buy an entire "album," but there was just something really fun about spending time in a music store and looking at CDs that you have never heard of. Those little listening stations were probably covered with germs, but they were such a good way to get to sample your music before committing at least $9.99 to an entire CD. And let's not forget being able to trade your music in once you were done with it and getting a little bit of store credit to get new stuff. I know there are still places like this around, but they're becoming more rare and probably won't even exist in a few years. But on the plus side, the Media Play in one nearby town got turned into a huge Goodwill, so I can't mourn its loss too much...

Today I'm thankful for...

My safety!

Today is the 13th anniversary of the Columbine school shootings. It's hard to believe that it was so many years ago, but I still remember how scary it was, especially as a sophomore in high school at the time. I've been blessed to grow up in a safe community and a safe home, but this shook me up, particularly when other school shootings started happening across the country. Thankfully, nothing ever happened here, and for that I am extremely grateful. Take a moment today to remember all of the victims of all of the shootings and to thank God (and a soldier and a policeman) for your own safety.

Today I'm thankful for...

High fives!

Today is National High Five Day. Evidently it's to help raise money for cancer. I just skimmed the website, so I'm not sure how that works, but I'll give someone a high five anyway...

Today I'm thankful for...

Small notebooks!

I love technology. I've got a ton of apps on my phone and iPad that help me remember what I need to do, where I need to go, and why I need to do it. However, there's something that just can't replace writing a to-do list. I think there's something about the physical act of writing and crossing off items that makes me feel more accomplished than erasing them from an app. Plus, a small notebook is portable and doesn't require an Internet connection (which is great for work since our servers have been sick a lot this semester). If someone is giving you information, you don't have to wait to boot up your gadget and open an app; you just start writing. Now, finding a pen in my behemoth purse is a different story...

Today I am thankful for...

My tax man!

AKA Dad, but since I was thankful for him on his birthday, I had to change it up a bit! Dad has done my taxes every year since I've gotten a paycheck. He does them as early as possible, so when people are panicking over deadlines, I can rest assured knowing that my money has been gone for at least a month!

Today I'm thankful for...

Rain!

Heavy rain on a Monday morning after a gorgeous/wonderful weekend is not necessarily the best thing, but I'm thankful for rain, just like I'm thankful for sunshine. Not only is rain God's car wash (thanks for getting the bird poo that built up over the weekend...), but it also helps renew and refresh everything. It also makes us appreciate the sunshine that much more! Without rain, everything would dry up, and we would be in a terrible situation. It may not always be fun to drive in, but it beats a drought!

Today I'm thankful for...

Free tickets to the Southern Women's Show!

I won a set of tickets to the Southern Women's Show and the Princess Diana exhibit from Wilson Living magazine (side note, I forgot that I had even entered the drawing, so when I got the email saying I won, it was a complete surprise!), so Mom and I went today. We've been several times, but this was the first time we had gone on a Sunday. It was great because it wasn't too crowded, and we weren't rushed like we have been in the past when we've gone on Saturdays. I spent more money than I should have, but it only comes around once a year so I feel justified! =)

Today I'm thankful for...

Pinterest!

I'm going to keep this short since I'm cutting it close tonight! If you don't know what Pinterest is, go look it up right now. I'll wait... Welcome back! I'm thankful for Pinterest for the ideas that it gives me to make recipes that I probably can't cook, art projects that I probably will mess up, and decorations that I'll probably never use. It does help me waste time though. All sarcasm aside, it actually is a great resource for sharing ideas. I have actually made one recipe from it, and I've gotten some outfit ideas. My brain needs all of the help it can get, so I'll welcome any creative way to keep all of my ideas in one place!

Today I'm thankful for...

Drive through car washes!

It may be the lazy man's way out, but it's the only way my car gets cleaned! And between the pollen and the bird poop, my car definitely needs to be cleaned quite often!

Today I'm thankful for...

Grilled cheese sandwiches!

Today is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. I'd like to thank whoever comes up with these days because they make some of my postings so much easier. Personally, I think this would be better celebrated in the wintertime because grilled cheese goes so well with soup, and both of those things make me think of winter. However, I'm not picky and will eat just about anything, anytime (exhibit A: posting yesterday about eating ice cream year round, exhibit B: the time I grossed someone out by eating ravioli for breakfast), so I'll celebrate grilled cheese anytime. I'll also celebrate long, drawn-out sentences (like the previous one) anytime but grilled cheese tastes better.

If I have a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and avocado on it, am I still honoring the holiday? Tough questions...

Today I'm thankful for...

Ice cream!

I've been trying to eat healthier lately and exercise more, but sometimes you just get a craving for something sweet. I have been wanting ice cream lately, and I had it twice today. Oops! It's probably my favorite dessert because it comes in so many flavors. Someone said today that it was almost too cold to be eating ice cream. I told her that there was no such thing as it being too cold for ice cream! Anyone with me here?

Today I'm thankful for...

Siblings!

Today is Siblings Day (yes, for real). Although I only have one sibling who will get his entry later in the year, I am thankful for siblings in general. The relationship between siblings is a special one. You may fight like crazy, but if anyone outside of the family says something bad about your sibling(s), then you will rip that person to shreds. To all of you siblings out there, Happy Siblings Day!

Today I'm thankful for...

Couch to 5K!

I'm not a runner, but I've always wanted to be. There's something about saying "I'm going for a run," that just makes you sound so athletic. I've had many failed attempts at running, but I've never really built up enough stamina to be able to run more than about 30 feet. Enter the Couch to 5K program. The C25K program is a 9 week training program that lets you build up your jogging slowly until you can run for a consistent 30 minutes (approximately 3 miles). I just started week 2, for about the 40th time, and it was hard. So hard that I was talking back to the podcast and disagreeing with the voice on it! But, I want to stick with it because I want to be a runner and this is the best way to make sure that I don't try to go overboard and end up hurting myself. Also, I just realized that this would've fit well with the 4 days of fitness last week! Oh well, this one's a bonus for you!

Today I am thankful that my Lord and Savior has been resurrected! He is alive so that we can live more abundantly! Happy Easter everyone!

P.S. I am also thankful once again for my family...as crazy as they are... ;-p

Today I'm thankful for...

Karaoke!

Will and I ventured out to a karaoke place last night as a belated birthday celebration. Even though he had invited a few people along, it ended up just being us. For those who have known me for a while, you may be surprised to hear that I was nervous about porforming; for those who don't know me as well, this is surprising because I'm pretty obnoxious and love to be the center of attention, but I digress. Well ended up going on stage with me for our song choice, "Friends in Low Places" (I know, I know...), and we ended up inviting most of the members of a drunken bachelor party onstage with us, which really helped drown me out! Once I finally got started, it was a ton of fun! We are definitely going back, although next time we'll pick some songs ahead of time because that was the hardest part of the night!

What I'm thankful for: April 6

Today I'm thankful for...

Good Friday!

Even though I'm a Christian, I am by no means a religious scholar. I know that Good Friday was the day that Jesus was crucified. I've done a tiny amount of research on why it is called Good Friday, but I haven't found a clear answer. Guess I should ask my pastor, or, um, read my Bible more carefully!

I'm so thankful that Jesus chose to die on the cross for me (and all of you!). Can you imagine a world where we still had to make sacrifices to atone for every single sin that we committed? If you've read the Old Testament, then you'll see the sacrifices are not little things either; we're talking slaughtering animals and other not-so-pleasant things. When Jesus was crucified, His blood became the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. I won't even try to pretend to be able to explain everything or even to still understand it, but I know enough to know it was the ultimate sacrifice.

On this Good Friday, remember what He has done. Celebrate the life that you have been given and the ability to be forgiven for your sins by repenting, rather than sacrificing. And, if you'd like to attend an Easter service this weekend but don't know where to go, please visit my church, Joy Church. We're having 4 services: tomorrow night at 5 and 7 and Sunday morning at 9 and 11. If you want to attend any of those, please leave me a comment and I'll go with you.

Today I'm thankful for...

The healthy living program at work!

I'm a somewhat competitive person. It's really bizarre to me because I've never played any type of team sports or participated in activities where competition is a benefit, but in my daily life, I'm pretty competitive. So, when my employer announced a healthy living program that included a challenge against other people, I was in! I've been doing it for about 2.5 months and while I haven't lost a significant amount of weight, I have started to eat healthier and have been exercising a lot more. I've been making healthy lifestyle changes that were spurred by competition with others but will be continued because of competition with myself. Thanks program at work that has kind of died down but will hopefully have a resurgence in the fall for helping me take the first steps to being healthier!

Today I'm thankful for...

My fitbit!

I don't remember how I first heard about the fitbit (on another blog, perhaps), but as soon as I did, I wanted one (because I'm impulsive like that). When you read the description of it, you might wonder what the big deal is. When you see the price, you may really wonder what the big deal is. For the record, I got mine on eBay for below the list price, and I still had buyer's remorse! Now that I've had it for a couple of weeks, I have to say that I'm hooked on it! It's a pedometer, sleep tracker, and activity tracker (among other things) all rolled into one. It integrates with myfitnesspal.com (see yesterday's posting!), so it gives me a good idea of how active I really am (or how sedentary unfortunately). Plus, I contacted customer service about buying another base so I could synchronize it at work, and they're going to send me one free. How nice is that? So, if anyone has one or decides to buy one, let me know so we can become friends on the fitbit site and have some healthy competition to see who's the most active!

What I'm thankful for: April 3

Today I'm thankful for...

Myfitnesspal.com!

I absolutely love this website! It allows you to track food and exercise, join groups, track weight loss, post on forums, and receive support. It has just about every food and drink I've ever put in (the exception was a diet Dr. Pepper and pineapple from Sonic, but it had them listed separately so I was able to track it that way). Tracking is essential for losing weight and getting healthier, and this (FREE) site does a great job of letting you keep up with everything. Plus, it has iPhone and Android apps, so you can track on the go.

Okay, enough of the commercial for tonight. If you join or are already on the site, find me! I'm a m b e r i a m (there aren't any spaces, but I figure that will keep spammish things from finding me...maybe?).

Today I'm thankful for...

Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred DVD!

Okay, this is one of those things that I think if I say I'm thankful for, it might make me appreciate it more. Maybe. Ha. Since this is a 4 day workweek (for many people) and the beginning of April (which really marks the beginning of Spring for me, despite what the calendar says otherwise), I've decided to do kind of a theme week.

Introducing...4 days of fitness!

For those of you who aren't acquainted with the 30 day shred program, it's a DVD from Jillian Michaels (formerly a trainer on The Biggest Loser) that consists of 3 levels. I'm only on level 1 still, which is 3 circuits of 3 minutes strength training, 2 minutes cardio, and 1 minute of ab work. It doesn't sound like much, but it's brutal. However, I've heard so many good things about it, that I've decided to give it a try. Wish me luck since I can barely lift my fingers to type this, and I'm not even too far into it!

Today I'm thankful for...

Nothing!

Ha! April Fools'! I'm thankful for more than I will ever cover on this blog! Admittedly, some days it can be a challenge to write. I might be tired, it may have been a cruddy day, or I just don't even feel like doing it. Then I remember how much I've been blessed and know that practicing gratitude will always make me feel better and that inspires me to post something brilliant and thought-provoking...or moderately readable at best!

What are some of you thankful for?
