Finishing the first month of postings!
Ha ha, this is my "cop out" posting. But seriously, I'm thankful for getting through the first month of postings. I can't say that it's made me a LOT more grateful in my daily life, but I think it's helped somewhat. It has helped me focus on the little things more and think about things I took for granted. It's also stretched my brain and creativity. And we're just a month into it. Thank you all of you who are reading! You may get your own special posting in the future... ;)
1 month down, 11 to go!

Today I'm thankful for...
Good workouts!
This one's going to be short and sweet (like me...ha...that joke never gets old). A couple of weeks ago, Will and I went to the grand opening of our friends' Crystal and Israel's gym, Re:MOVE//Training. They had door prizes, and he won a free month, and I won two free weeks. I did my first workout of the two week session tonight, and WOWSER! I definitely thought I was going to be sick even before the warm-up was finished! But, as much as I struggled and as sore as I'll be for the next couple of days, it was totally worth it! It also really makes me appreciate how blessed I am to have good health and the ability to do most of the things they did (I'll get there eventually!). Now, will someone come brush my teeth for me since I can't lift my arms?

Firestone's Road Hazard plan for tires!
This definitely was not my original posting topic for today, but since I had to use that wonderful service, I thought i would give it a shout out!
Yesterday, Will and I went s lot of places and had plans to go to a church event and a party after church. When we came out of church, we discovered that my tire was flat. Sigh. For those of you keeping up at home, this is the second flat tire that I've had in less than 6 months. Double sigh. Thankfully, the portable pump inflated it enough to get me home but it changed up our plans a little bit! So today, we got to go to Firestone and have them fix it. Since I purchased the Road Hazard plan when I bought these tires, they fixed it free of charge, not to be an advertisement here, but Road Hazard is worth the money! But, I hope not to visit Firestone again for quite a while!

My DVR!
It's been a busy past couple of weeks, and I haven't had a lot of time to even think about anything beyond just making it through each day! Thankfully, my DVR has worked overtime and is ready for me to settle in tomorrow and clear some things off of it. DVR, I am all too happy to comply with your request!

Great double dates!
So it seems my blog and iPad conspired against me and this posted a blank posting last night. Sigh.
I can't remember what I wrote, but I know it had something to do with the fun double date that Will and I went on last night. It's sometimes hard as an adult to make friends, especially ones that both you and your boyfriend like, so I was thankful for that.
That's all I've got this morning. Blogger, please play nicely today...

Today I'm thankful for...
Hoodies!
Not to continually talk about the weather, but it's been raining in Tennessee a lot lately. I don't know the statistics for average January rainfall and where we stand, but it seems like it's rained at least 20 out of 26 days in January (I arbitrarily selected that number but it could be true, I guess...). When it rains, for some reason, work doesn't shut down, so I still have to leave the dry warmth of my home and go to my car. It's not a long enough walk to merit using an umbrella, plus, I hate trying to get in the car and fight with putting my umbrella down and get it into the car without soaking everything. For that reason, I'm thankful for the hoodie. Practical, comfortable, and keeps my 'do dry so I don't look like a drowned rat when I go into work. Also, hoodies have the added bonus of keeping you warm. They also can make you look tough. Tough beats cold, drowned rat any day, so the next time it rains, put your hood up and sing a little bit of "Lose Yourself" while you watch the poor suckers fighting with umbrellas. You'll thank me later.

Yoga!
My job offers free yoga classes every Wednesday at noon. With the way the last couple of weeks have been, I definitely needed some relaxation time! Yoga is great because it makes you feel taller. For someone who tops out at 5'3 on a good day, feeling taller is always a good thing!

Belly laughs!
"Hooray for belly laughs!" said the guy on the Global Belly Laugh website |
File this under "stuff I couldn't make up even if I tried." Did you know that today was Global Belly Laugh Day? No, for real. The only reason I know that is because (nerd alert) when I was trying to make a list of my topics for this year, and I went to a website that listed holidays/quirky days, this came up. So, today, on the global day of belly laughter, I am thankful for belly laughs that inevitably almost always produce snorts in their wake. When's the last time you had a good belly laugh?

Weather forecasters!
We supposedly had some rough weather last night. I slept like a baby who had just had a bottle of warm milk...and turkey...and any other food or drink that lets you sleep deeply, so I didn't hear a single thing! But, for those who were up all night watching it, you owe a lot to the weather forecaster. They're up all night, calming people down and letting you know when it's okay to get out of the bathtub or wherever you're riding the storm out. They also bring news of good tidings in the form of snow delays/closings. Who else protects you, brings you good news, and can read those little swirly weather graphics? That's right. No one.

Forgiveness!
Like most, or even all or my readers, I am a human being. As a human being, I do some pretty dumb things, usually on a daily basis. I hurt people's feelings with my words and actions. I hurt God through my sins. Sometimes I even hurt myself because of things I do. Thankfully, there is a concept called forgiveness. Forgiveness allows sins to be wiped clean and hearts to be mended. Forgiveness lets you have a second chance with God, others, and yourself. Matthew 6:14-15 says "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." Forgiveness will set you free and let you quit stewing over past hurts. It's not easy, but it's definitely worth it.

Today I'm thankful for...
A sense of humor!
"Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you can find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it."
- Bill Cosby
A sense of humor is not necessarily being able to tell good jokes or perform physical comedy. It refers more to a state of mind (not to get too new age-y here). If you can find something to smile or laugh about, even if you're having a horrible day, then you'll start to find that your day will be a little bit better, and sometimes you can even make it better than you thought it could be. Laughing tricks you into being happy. Frowning just makes you wrinkly and sour looking.

Radio giveaways!
Last month Will won UFC tickets from the radio, and the fight is tonight. This free date night (thanks to us planning to park at the BEEP lot at LP Field and walk over) made me think about other radio giveaways I've won. Many years ago when Thunder 94 was still around (anyone remember that station?), I won some kind of Guinness prize pack which included the Guinness Book of World Records and a glass Guinness mug. Totally appropriate for a middle schooler. A couple of years ago, I won John Mayer tickets. I think that trumps UFC tickets, but who am I to judge? ;) Radio giveaways are wonderful, and who knows, maybe tomorrow I'll be thankful for the UFC!

Heaters!
As Iwhined about mentioned yesterday, it got really cold in Tennessee after some mild weather (mid to upper 30s is "really cold" to me, a native Southerner!). I'm normally not a cold-natured person. In fact, my poor office mate has had to turn her heater off a couple of times because I've gotten dramatically overheated and threatened to turn on my fan. However, something about yesterday proved to be too much even for the likes of me, and I couldn't stay away from my tiny office heater. It was then I realized how thankful I am for that heater and the heat in my car, my home, and any other building I go into. The weekend/early next week forecast looks much more mild, so I'm going to thank those heaters while I need them and hopefully remember how much I love them next week when I'm sweating because of them!

Allergy shots!
Tennessee has crazy weather. We had snow Friday, temperatures in the 60s yesterday, freezing temperatures today, and we're supposed to be back in the 60s by the weekend. Crazy weather doesn't really cause allergies, but it wreaks havoc on the ol' sinuses. Allergy shots have at least helped me feel a little more stable in spite of this weird weather and very mild winter. Plus, by the time next fall rolls around and I've been on them for about a year, I should see major relief from allergies. I'm optimistic enough about this to get poked with 3-6 needles per week; let's see if it pays off!

Today I'm thankful for...
Christian radio stations!
I live near Nashville, which is in the Bible Belt and known as the capital of Contemporary Christian Music. I haven't always listened to Christian music. There were a few bands that I kind of sort of knew of in junior high and high school (Jars of Clay! DC Talk!), but I didn't listen to the local Christian stations on any kind of regular basis.
Fast forward to about 8 or 9 months ago. By then, I had been attending church regularly for the first time in my life and wanted to take some steps towards getting some of the junk out of my life. Part of that junk was the music that came into my bedroom and car every morning when I got ready for and drove to work and every evening when I drove home. I started listening to two local Christian radio stations (Way FM and The Fish), and I've noticed that it really does make a difference in how I act on my commute. I've still got a few tiny road rage issues (ha!), but it's hard to think really, really mean thoughts towards someone when you're listening to a song about Jesus' love. So thanks Christian radio stations. You guys have probably saved me from getting a couple of tickets!

Today I'm thankful for...
Martin Luther King, Jr.!
This was a hard one for me to start. Admittedly, my knowledge of Dr. King is limited to knowing that he served in the Civil Rights movement. As a white female in the 21st century, it can be a little hard to put myself in his shoes. I've read many fictional and non-fiction accounts of the era, but since I didn't live through it, there's no way for me to know of the struggles that he and millions of other faced.
After doing a little research and reteaching myself some 3rd grade History, I realized that Dr. King's message was not all about skin color and race. His underlying belief was that all people are created equal and should be judged on character. As a woman, this resonates because it wasn't that long ago that my gender didn't have all of the same freedoms that men did (and we still truly don't, but let's not get too political here...). Dr. King is one of many who have fought for equality for all, and today we celebrate his legacy.

Today I'm thankful for...
Encouragement!
Whether it's a message scrawled on a sidewalk or a handwritten note, words of encouragement can make an enormous difference to a person, especially if he is having a rough day. Words of encouragement are free but the returns are huge. Proverbs 12:25 in the Amplified Bible says that "anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, but an encouraging word makes it glad." Have you been an encouragement today?
On a side note, I think I'm going to start doing a "serious Sunday" posting. I don't want to be too gimmicky with this, but Sunday seems like a great day for some introspection and reflection. Thanks for all of you out there who are reading and have given me encouraging words!

Makeup!
I'm not what one would call "skilled" in the art of putting on makeup, but I do okay enough most days. I'm thankful for makeup because it hides a lot- dark circles, blemishes, redness, etc. Someday I hope to learn how to do better eye makeup (I've watched some YouTube videos but my skill has yet to improve). For now, I'm cool with what I'm doing.

Distance education programs!
I started my spring semester of grad school tonight via a distance education program. On a night like tonight when it's cold and I'm tired, I'm extremely thankful not to have to sit in a classroom for 2.5 hours. It's much nicer to have class online, no matter how much it "takes away from the experience." Also, I can knit and eat pretzels during class. Try doing that in a traditional classroom...

I'll spare details, but I've had a good relationship with Pepto over the past couple of days. Here's a little trivia for you straight from Pepto's Wikipedia page: it was originally called Bismosal: Mixture Cholera Infantum. Now why on earth would they change that catchy name?

Today I'm thankful for...
Mondays!
I'm not gonna lie; this one's a challenge for me, but part of this blog's purpose is to help me be grateful for things that maybe I take for granted or that I normally don't appreciate. And let's be honest, how many people really do appreciate Mondays? For most people, they're the first day of the work and/or school week and they mark the end of the beloved weekend that I spoke about just two short days ago.
Mondays!
It's already Monday again?!? |
On the other hand, you're alive and you're well enough to complain about Mondays.
I don't really want to get too deep on this blog (hurts my brain), but how many people didn't wake up this morning? How many people would love to "it's Monday" as their biggest complaint? You get the picture. Psalm 118:24 tells us that this is the day the Lord has made and urges us to rejoice and be glad in it. My Bible (and I'm willing to bet I'm not alone here) doesn't have an asterisk that excludes Monday from this verse. Even though Mondays aren't usually the most appreciated day, and oftentimes the sound of the alarm clock on a Monday morning is enough to make me some people want to throw it out the window, it's another chance for life, and that makes me thankful.
Now, will someone send this entry to me next Monday morning?

Today I'm thankful for...
God!
Although this wasn't my first entry, this is first on my list of things I'm grateful for! I have been a believer for as long as I can remember, but it's only been within the last year and a half that I have really started working on strengthening my relationship with Him by joining a church, having regular quiet time, learning the Word, etc. He has blessed me very richly, and life just keeps getting better as I commit myself further to living for Him. I've never been one of those people who can rattle off Bible verses or witness to strangers, so it's hard for me to put this into words, but anyone who is a believer can probably understand what I'm trying to say. If anyone is reading who wants to know more about having a relationship with God, let me know, and we'll talk. As my pastor says every week, "God loves you as if you were the only person in this world to love." I truly believe that, and I hope all of you do too!

The weekend!
Yes, I know that I only worked three days this week after having a lot of time off, but I can still be thankful for the weekend.
Here are the top 4 reasons why weekends rock:
1. Church
2. I get to see my boyfriend who has been working nights since Thanksgiving and has Sundays off
3. No alarm clocks
4. No 30+ minute commutes to and from work
And those are just the top 4. There are at least a gazillion more reasons why weekends rock, but I'm sure I don't have to explain them to you! Happy weekend!

Today I'm thankful for...
My dad!
Today's my dad's 50th birthday!! Happy birthday, Dad! I'm thankful for my dad for more reasons than I can even begin to list in a single blog entry or blog. He's a wonderful person, great provider, hard worker, and just look at how much he loves me. Okay, let's maybe scratch that last one. ;-p He is generous and unselfish and has taught me many things in life, including, most recently, how to easily crack an egg (sorry, Mom). I love you, Dad, and I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful birthday...and don't forget to sign up for that AARP membership...
My dad!
This really doesn't even need words... |
Today's my dad's 50th birthday!! Happy birthday, Dad! I'm thankful for my dad for more reasons than I can even begin to list in a single blog entry or blog. He's a wonderful person, great provider, hard worker, and just look at how much he loves me. What I'm thankful for: January 5
Today I'm thankful for...
Justin Timberlake!
So despite my best plans (as laid out by a Myspace, yes Myspace entry in 2007), Justin Timberlake has decided to propose to someone else. Jessica something or other. I hear she's an actress or something like that. Humph. It's cool, I guess. I mean, my boyfriend is great, and Hollywood marriages never really work out anyway. Despite our failed relationship, I'm still thankful for him. He can sing (despite what some of you might think), he can dance, and he can act (despite what some of you might think). And, most importantly, he's not too rough on the eyes. JT, I'm thankful for you for bringing entertainment into my world. You've brought sexy back, and for that, I am grateful.
A clip for all of you J-Timberlake lovers out there...

And a WEBSITE devoted to him on SNL for all of you super fans. Now excuse me while I go sing along to the Barry Gibb talk show theme...again...

What I'm thankful for: January 4
Today I'm thankful for...
Coffee!
I've been off work since December 23, so I'm very thankful for the coffee that woke me up this morning. Actually, I'm thankful for coffee every morning and every Saturday before church (hooray for Billy Goat Coffee being so close to Joy Church!), but this morning, I amespecially thankful for that extra burst of caffeine!

Today I'm thankful for...
Friends!
Since yesterday's post was about my family, I decided to devote today to my friends. Once again, I'm including everyone in one big generalized lump. ;) Friends are usually referred to as the family you choose. If you choose your friends correctly, then they can be a great blessing in your life.
I'll go ahead and make a confession also. I'm not the greatest friend in the world. I tend to forget to keep up with people until it's been months or even years since I've seen or talked to them. Then, I'll make an awkward effort to reconnect that usually doesn't happen. I'm going to try to do better this year because there are a lot of people I want to reconnect with and a lot of people I want to become better friends with. So, force me out of my hermit-like state this year so we can be friends!
Enough philosophizing for now. I'm going to go email some old and potentially new friends! (Also, I'm going to count the number of times I wrote the word "friends" in this post and try to get the Friends theme song out of my head).

Today I am thankful for...
Family!
Family. Those people that Godstuck blessed you with. Whether you're close with your family or not, they're (supposed to be) the ones who stick with you through thick and thin. My family definitely sticks by me no matter what, and I'm truly grateful for that. So to my immediate family and extended family, I just want to say that I love you all and hope for the best for you this year and beyond!

Today I am thankful for...
A new year!
January 1 is such an exciting day. It's the start of a new year, so full of promises, resolutions, hopes, and dreams. Of course all of those resolutions will likely be blown apart by the middle of January (wow, this cynicism came out of nowhere...), but for now, it's nice to have goals in place. Happy New Year everyone! Let's make 2012 a great year!
