Today I'm thankful for...
Martin Luther King, Jr.!
This was a hard one for me to start. Admittedly, my knowledge of Dr. King is limited to knowing that he served in the Civil Rights movement. As a white female in the 21st century, it can be a little hard to put myself in his shoes. I've read many fictional and non-fiction accounts of the era, but since I didn't live through it, there's no way for me to know of the struggles that he and millions of other faced.
After doing a little research and reteaching myself some 3rd grade History, I realized that Dr. King's message was not all about skin color and race. His underlying belief was that all people are created equal and should be judged on character. As a woman, this resonates because it wasn't that long ago that my gender didn't have all of the same freedoms that men did (and we still truly don't, but let's not get too political here...). Dr. King is one of many who have fought for equality for all, and today we celebrate his legacy.
